Celebrating People and Place

There’s an opportunity to sample a flavour of English rural life this February at a community-inspired exhibition centred around mapping ancient field names at Broadwindsor, Dorset.

The project, called The Place I Love, has encouraged many of those in the West Dorset village to consider what the community means to them today, in particular as a place to live and work, as well as to grow up.

So far, the project has inspired local artists and writers to get creative, which in turn has encouraged others to reflect on why Broadwindsor is special.

The event in February brings together the results of field names research, along with  poems and photos by local children, as well as a selection of locally collected folk songs, all in celebration of people and place.

It’ll also see the unveiling of a specially commissioned  map of the local area undertaken by Dorset artist Megan Edwards.

The project, which is being coordinated by Margery Hookings for Windrose Rural Media Trust, has received  funding from Dorset AONB’s Sustainable Development, and Stepping into Nature funds, Dorset Council’s Community and Culture Project Fund, and Broadwindsor Group Parish Council.

It’s also enjoyed invaluable support and enthusiasm from local volunteers.

The celebration on Saturday 12th February 2022, at the Comrades’ Hall, Broadwindsor between 2-4pm, includes refreshments by and in aid of the WI, and a raffle.  Admission is free.
