Unseen Heritage: An Act Of Making

Clayhill Arts, which provides residential courses for artists and creative professionals from their converted farm near Bridgwater in Somerset, in association with Windrose Rural Media Trust, has organised a very special evening of archive films and traditional West Country songs performed by Windrose’s resident folk and heritage artist Amanda Boyd.

The evening is themed around An Act of Making, and will explore the traditions of brick making, pottery, thatching, pole lathe, broom making, peg making and lacemaking using previously unseen footage from the Windrose archive.

Films include:

• Traditional brick making, Whaddon, near Salisbury
• Verwood Pottery
• Potter John Leach, Muchelney, Somerset
• Lace making, Malmesbury, Wiltshire
• Pole lathe working, Dorset
• Brush manufacturing, Mere, Wiltshire
• Thatching, Dorset

A number of these crafts now lie on the endangered heritage crafts list and Clayhill Arts is using the evening as an opportunity to highlight their importance and connect with our past communities.

The event is being staged with support from English Folk Song and Dance Society, South West Heritage Trust, Heritage Craft Association, Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre and The Higgins Bedford art gallery and museum, and the BFI Film Audience Network.
